TNO is one of the largest non-governmental, independent research organisations in Europe, with a turnover of € 500 million and a staff of more than 4.350 persons. TNO aims to increase industry’s competitiveness and to assist local, national and international governments with policy formulation and implementation. TNO has the skills to turn technologies derived from basic research into practical applications. TNO’s vast technological resources make multidisciplinary projects possible and help to give clients the innovative edge; whether it be product development, production technology, materials research, process analysis, trouble shooting, testing, certification or consultancy.

TNO possesses unique expertise and R&D facilities. Major fields of activity are: environmental end energy research, industrial technology, agriculture and food, defense, health care, technology studies, building and construction, transport and infrastructure. TNO Built Environment and Geosciences, Water Treatment Department. The aim of the Water Treatment Department is the development of new, improved processes for water production and water treatment. The department concentrates on membrane technology, ion exchange, adsorption, extraction, crystallisation, electrochemistry, and their combinations in hybrid-technologies. Several tools for process evaluation studies are used, examples are ‘ASPEN PLUS’ flowsheeting and multi criteria analysis, STEPS, SAS, and Systematic Process Identification (SPI).

The type of work ranges from feasibility studies, laboratory-scale testing to pilot-plant-scale demonstrations. The Water Treatment Department exploits over 30 patents, and is currently coordinator of the EC projects FP7/AquaFit4Use and FP6/Socopse and partner in FP7/TIGI and FP7/NAMETECH.
