University of Kalmar, the School of Pure and Applied Natural Sciences at the University of Kalmar has over 250 employees, including over 100 PhD students and around 750 undergraduate students. Despite its size (9,500 students), the impact of the research of the University, and in particular of the School, has placed it at the forefront of Swedish higher education research institutions (Swedish Research Council, 2006). This enviable status is a result of efforts in the biosciences, in particular biotechnology and biomedical and environmental sciences and related technologies.

The group related to the project has contributed significantly to the award of this status through its work in materials science, nanotechnology and bioorganic chemistry. This group, currently numbering 16 researchers and PhD students, is focused at the interface of chemistry, biology and physics and is both fundamental and applied in character, as reflected by a broad range of key collaborations with both academia and industry.
