The Institute for Interfacial Engineering of the University of Stuttgart is the University counterpart of the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology (Fraunhofer GB). The University institute stands for its expertise in biochemical nanotechnology, focusing on surface-determined processes to synthesize functional materials as well as developing new processes to employ functional materials in applications such as waste water treatment. The research interests cover topics, including molecular imprinting, (affinity) membrane technology, biofunctional core-shell nanoparticles and biochip technology. The biochemical expertise covers synthesis of molecules, polymers, particles, surface layers by self-assembly, and layer-by-layer deposition. It runs chemical and chemical engineering labs on the University campus as well as in the neighboring Fraunhofer IGB, which is a key institute of the Fraunhofer Society network on Life Sciences.
